Why QUT?

[Print-friendly version]

What is a 'full fee-paying domestic undergraduate' place?

Students in an undergraduate full fee-paying (Dfee) place incur higher tuition fees than students in Commonwealth supported places (CSP).

If you enrol in a Dfee place you are required to pay the full amount of the Dfee tuition fees up-front, with no discount, by the census date. Dfee tuition fees are fixed for the calendar year, are reviewed annually, and may increase.

Enrolled Dfee students who are Australian citizens or the holders of permanent humanitarian visas may request Commonwealth assistance to pay for their tuition fees via FEE-HELP. However, a Commonwealth Government 20% loan fee is applicable on top of your tuition fees.

Holders of permanent humanitarian visas, permanent resident visa and New Zealand citizens will be requested to provide QUT with documentation, such as their permanent visa, prior to the census date of the first teaching period of enrolment to demonstrate their eligibility for a domestic place.  For more information regarding Commonwealth Assistance please visit the goingtouni website.

Which courses have Dfee places on offer?

From mid-2008 QUT will not offer Dfee places to commencing students.

How do Dfee students apply to change to become a CSP student in the same course?

To be eligible to change from Dfee to CSP, the Dfee student must have completed 96 credits points of study in the Dfee course (ie not including advanced standing, other studies etc) and meet the major (January) QTAC cut-off in the year they wish to be changed to CSP.

For example, a student who takes a Dfee place in 2007 and applies for CSP in the same course in 2008 will have to meet the 2008 major (January) QTAC cut-off. The table on page 16 of Real Options (formerly Making Inroads) details what ranks will be awarded on the completion of 96 (or more) credit points of QUT degree study.

Double degrees

Double degree Dfee students who are 'dropping down' to either component degree and have not yet completed 96 credits points of study in the Dfee double degree will still be a Dfee student in the component degree. For example a Dfee Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws student who has completed 48 credits points and is seeking to drop to the Bachelor of Business will be offered the Bachelor of Business as Dfee.

However, upon completion of 96 credit points as a Dfee student in both Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business the student may be eligible to become a CSP student (subject to meeting the relevant cut-off).

Invitations

QUT Admissions will invite students (via the student email account) who are expected to complete 96 credit points in a Dfee place to move into a CSP place. Closing dates apply and will be included in the invitation. QUT Admissions will notify successful students via QUT student email.

Students would then be required to lodge a HECS-HELP eCAF via QUT Virtual by the relevant census date to confirm the CSP place, however their enrolment program is not affected. Students who fail to submit a HECS-HELP eCAF will revert back to the Dfee place and enrolment is not affected.

Note: Summer Program enrolment will still incur tuition fees regardless of the students Dfee/CSP status, if the unit is solely taught on a tuition fee basis.

Students who have completed 96 credit points in a Dfee place and who are eligible to transfer to CSP but choose to remain as a Dfee student will not receive any further invitations to transfer to CSP. However, such students can subsequently make a request a transfer to CSP by emailing QUT Admissions. Eligibility to transfer is still subject to the major (January) QTAC cut-off in the year they wish to be changed to CSP.

Dfee students changing courses, majors etc

Changing course

Dfee students are eligible to change course in the normal manner. However, please note special rules apply to Dfee students in double degrees who are dropping down to either component degree, as detailed above.

Changing major

Students in Dfee places can change their major as per the normal change of major rules. However, they will remain as a Dfee student, even if the major that they are changing to does not offer Dfee places.
